HELP US SAVE OUR PRESCHOOL

WE NEED STUDENTS!

Dear Friends,

We’re sounding the alarm about the impending loss of this gem of a school. Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School, which as you may know has been operating for 61 years, is in serious danger of closing its doors for good this year unless we are able to attract several more students. Without a certain number of students, the preschool will not be able to continue through the coming school year.

This school has always had a place in the hearts of local families, with generations of children from our neighborhood and beyond having received their first school experiences there. The school is totally unique and offers an experience to children and parents alike that cannot be found elsewhere.

If you know of any families, including your own, with children between the ages of 2-5, please let them know about our school. (Details about the program below.)

Even if you don’t have young children, please help us to spread the word. We greatly appreciate all your efforts on the school’s behalf!

Here is information about Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School:

Established in 1948 and designed for children ages 2 ½ to 5, Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School is a high-quality, half-day program with classes held 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., either 3 or 4 days a week depending on enrollment, from September through June. Our program has many great features to benefit your child:

• A play-oriented, structured program fostering academic, creative, and social skills.
• A spacious classroom with ample play spaces, books, toys, games, a full gym.
• Parental involvement through assisting the teacher during class several times a month, providing healthy snacks, attending planning meetings.
• Location is in a beautifully-maintained and secure historic facility: Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church.
• Tuition (Sept-June): $1500/year for 3 days/week. Quarterly payment schedule.

To inquire about the school, arrange a visit, or to reserve your child’s spot in the class, please call the Teacher, Michelle Potas, at 313-831-4312 (mpotas@gmail.com), or the Shields family at 313-822-3211 (gandjack1@yahoo.com).

Thank you in advance!
Jackie

Winter 2009 Enrollment

Happy New Year everyone!

We have a few spaces available at the Nursery School for Winter 2009 enrollment. If you are looking for a fun, enriching program for your preschooler (ages 2.5 through 5), please give us a call (313-822-3211), and come to visit the school.

We know you'll love our teacher, Ms. Michelle (we do!). Ms. Michelle always has interesting activities planned for the kids, including crafts, games, movement and music, gym time, dress up, and puzzles. There is a rice table and a water table too, for added fun. We also go on regular field trips to interesting places in the area such as orchards, The Henry Ford, roller skating, and many other destinations coming up.

Below is some information about the school. Give us a call, we would love to hear from you!

Established in 1948, the Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School is Michigan's oldest cooperative pre-school. Designed for children ages 2-1/2 to 5, it is a high-quality, half-day program with classes held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. either 3 or 4 days a week depending on enrollment.

Philosophy • The preschool offers a play-oriented, structured program designed to foster independence, self-esteem and internal control. The goal is to prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills to handle a wide variety of academic, social and interpersonal situations.

Instruction • The teacher is educated in child growth and development and has years of experience working with preschoolers.

Beautiful Facility • Located in the architecturally stunning Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in Indian Village, the preschool features a spacious classroom with extensive toys, arts & crafts, imaginative play area, water table, rice table, playscape and indoor gym.

Ideal Ratio • Enrollment is typically between 5 to 10 children, allowing for an intimate teacher/parent/child ratio.

Co-op Requirements • Parents assist the teacher at class time two to three times each month, provide healthy snacks, as well as attend monthly meetings. Depending upon class size, “non-co-op” enrollment may be available for an additional fee.

Tuition • (Sept-June co-op rate): $1500/year for 3 days/week; $2000/year for 4 days/week.

For more information:

Thank You for Your Support!

We would like to thank the community and everyone who came to our Silent Auction and 60th Birthday Party this past weekend (May 24). We had lots of fun and raised some essential funding for Jefferson Cooperative Nursery School! It was great to see all the friends, neighbors, parents, and former teachers and students of the nursery school. Magic John the Magician amazed the kids (and grown-ups) with his magic show, and artist BobKat drew caricatures non-stop the whole time! We are so grateful to these two gentlemen (aka John Anderson and Bob Anderson) for adding their talents to our event.

Personally, I was blown away by the generosity of our guests as they bid, and bid, and bid again on the many items we had to offer. In just one short afternoon, these kind folks contributed a great amount to our school, enabling us to move forward into the next school year with confidence. We extend our thanks to each and every one of our guests.

A big thank you goes to Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church for hosting the party in their lovely building. Our sincere gratitude goes out to the church for their 60 years of generous support of the nursery school. Thank you especially to Reverend Peter C. Smith, Reverend Traci M. Smith, Linda Rumon, Grace Crone, David Roberson, and Bill Slone for taking such good care of us here at the church, which has been our home since 1948.

We would like to thank the following financial contributors without whom our event could not have happened:
The Indian Village Women’s Garden Club, The Historic Indian Village Association, Bob VanDeventer and Susan Nye, Karen and Ken Cherven, Becky Dudash and John Canzano, Joan and Nat Morris, Fay and Rolland O’Hare, Phil and Shannon MacVean, Patti Little and Mark Lezotte, M. Elizabeth Bunn, Sandra H. Smith, and Harbortown Market.

We also wish to thank the following generous contributors to our party: Jacklyn & Cliff Kaye, Renita Clark, Michelle Potas, Anne Riha, Keith Martin, Betty and Larry Roberts, Bettermade Snack Foods, Sweetheart Bakery, Costco, Target, Dollar Daze, PizzaPapalis Rivertown, Indian Village Market, Jets Pizza Harbortown, Staples Detroit, and M-Pressions Marketing, LLC.

Thank you to the members of our Silent Auction and Party Planning Committee who donated countless hours and resources to get this event off the ground: Renita Clark, Jacklyn Kaye, our wonderful teacher, Michelle Potas, and yours truly, Jackie Hoats Shields. It was hard work for this small group, but it was worth it.

Finally, we are very grateful to the generous donors of the goods and services offered in our auction:
